5 Tips To Help You Stop Smoking

by Tim Green

I have been smoking for a long time now. Over forty years I have become thoughly addicted to cigarettes and I know I should give up but I also know that it will not be easy to stop smoking. So, I decided to read up on some of the different ways there are to stop smoking.

The way most people tackle the task of quitting smoking is by simply going cold turkey. They stop smoking and try to remain strong and determined enough to fight the craving and desire for cigarettes. Many people have succeeded in this way and I guess if you are astrong willed person this may work for you. I am not so sure this is the way for me to give up cigarettes as I suspect I would just start all over again.

For some people they need a replacement therapy such as a dummy cigarette. One of the habitual features of smoking is that you have something between your fingers and the idea is that by replacing that cigarette with something else to put between your fingers you can reduce the feeling of loss.

Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best so try smelling an ashtray. It stinks doesn’t it. Every time you want a cigarette go and smell an ashtray. It is very unpleasant and a great reminder of just what is happening to your lungs. Smelling an ashtray every time you are tempted to smoke should slow down you smoking and might just put you off forever.

One of the more recent developments has been nicotine patches which you fix onto your skin. The patches release a certain amount of nicotine into your skin which helps prevent your body craving the chemical. With your body’s habit satisfied you only need to get yourself over the idea of smoking and patches, perhaps, combined with one or other of the ideas mentioned here might do the trick for you.

Acupuncture has been used quite effectively for some people. My brother tried this and he went from being a heavy smoker to a non-smoker in one day. Unfortunately after a few years he started smoking again but maybe another treatment with acupuncture would have done the trick and stopped him from smoking again..

Ultimately giving up smoking comes down to willpower. Some of these tips and treatments may help but you must want to stop smoking or they will all fail. If you can build your resolve and determination to stop smoking then you will be much more likely to achieve success and this is where hypnosis comes in. With hypnosis I think the idea is that your subconcious mind is strengthened in it’s determination that you will not smoke. Some people seem to have found this very quickly effective.
